Essential Ingredients for Your Spooky Jalapeño Mummies

Crafting these adorable and tasty Jalapeño Bacon Mummies is a straightforward process, and the joy they bring when presented to guests is simply priceless. The key lies in a few simple, readily available ingredients that combine to create an explosion of flavor. You’ll love how easy it is to assemble these, leaving you more time to enjoy your party!

Here’s a detailed look at the ingredients you’ll need, along with some tips for selection:

  • Jalapeño Peppers (8-10): Choose firm, bright green jalapeños. For a milder mummy, remove all seeds and white membranes thoroughly. For an extra kick, leave a few seeds in!
  • Cream Cheese (8-ounce package): Full-fat cream cheese works best for a rich, creamy filling that holds up well during baking. Ensure it’s softened to room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Bacon (¾ cup): While you can cook and crumble fresh bacon (about 6 slices), I often take a convenient shortcut with packaged Hormel Real Bacon bits. This saves prep time without sacrificing flavor. If using fresh bacon, make sure it’s cooked crispy and finely diced.
  • Garlic Powder (¼ teaspoon): This adds a subtle, savory depth to the cheese mixture. Don’t confuse it with garlic salt, which can make the filling too salty.
  • Parmesan Cheese (¼ cup): Grated Parmesan cheese contributes a nutty, salty flavor and helps bind the cream cheese mixture. Freshly grated is always best, but pre-grated works too.
  • Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough (1, 8-ounce can): Any brand of refrigerated crescent dinner rolls will work perfectly. This dough is the magical “mummy wrap” that turns simple poppers into festive treats. You might need more than one can depending on the size of your jalapeños and how thinly you slice the dough.
  • Candy Eyeballs (16-20): These are the essential finishing touch that brings your mummies to life! They’re widely available, especially around Halloween. You can easily order them online if you can’t find them locally.

Carefully wrap the raw crescent dough around each jalapeño half, creating distinct “bandages.” Remember to leave a small opening near the top where the candy eyeballs will be placed after baking, giving your mummies their characteristic spooky gaze.

Creative Alternatives for Mummy Eyes

While candy eyeballs are the classic choice for giving your Jalapeño Bacon Mummies their unmistakable character, sometimes they can be hard to find, or you might prefer a less sugary option. Don’t worry, your mummies will still be incredibly charming and delicious with a few creative substitutions!

Pro Tip: For a quick and easy substitute, try using small, round, or contrasting-colored food items. The goal is to create a visual “eye” effect that adds to the mummy’s playful appearance.

  • Frozen Peas: These vibrant green spheres make surprisingly effective and healthy eyes, adding a pop of color.
  • Sliced Olives: Both black and green olives can be used. Slice them into small rounds or halves to create a distinct eye shape.
  • Chopped Red or Green Bell Pepper: Finely dice small pieces of bell pepper for a colorful and fresh alternative.
  • Poppy Seeds or Sesame Seeds: For a more subtle, speckled eye effect, you can dab a tiny bit of cream cheese or a drop of egg wash on the “eye” area and then sprinkle a few seeds.
  • Cream Cheese Dots with a Tiny Herb: For a more homemade look, pipe two tiny dots of cream cheese into the eye gaps and place a small sprig of chive or a tiny piece of a dark herb in the center of each dot.

Experiment with what you have on hand! The most important thing is to have fun with the presentation. The mummies will be a crowd-pleaser regardless of their “eyes.”

Common Questions About Jalapeño Bacon Mummies

Preparing a new recipe always comes with questions, especially when it involves party planning. Here are some frequently asked questions about making these delightful Jalapeño Bacon Mummies, along with helpful answers to ensure your success:

Can these be prepped ahead of time?

Absolutely! To streamline your party prep, you can mix the cream cheese filling ahead of time. You can even stuff the jalapeño peppers a day in advance. Simply cover the stuffed peppers tightly with plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator. This keeps the filling fresh and prevents the peppers from drying out.

However, I strongly recommend wrapping the peppers with the crescent roll dough just a short while before you plan to bake them. Doing this ensures optimal baking time and results in a beautifully flaky, golden-brown crust. If the dough sits too long on the peppers, it can become soggy and not achieve that desirable crispy texture.

Is there a substitute for cream cheese in the filling?

While cream cheese is my top recommendation for its perfect texture and ability to hold its shape, I have experimented with alternatives. For instance, I once tried using goat cheese. The flavor was undoubtedly delicious and added a unique tanginess. However, the goat cheese didn’t hold up as well in the heat of the oven and tended to melt a little too much, making the filling slightly runnier.

For the best structural integrity and creamy consistency, I highly recommend sticking with cream cheese. If you decide to explore other cream cheese substitutes and discover a fantastic result, please do share your experience and tips in the comments section!

How can I make the jalapeño mummies less spicy?

The heat from jalapeños is primarily concentrated in the seeds and the white membrane (pith) inside. To significantly reduce the spiciness, be meticulous when cleaning the peppers. Use a small spoon to scrape out all of the seeds and as much of the white membrane as possible. For extra caution, you can soak the cleaned jalapeño halves in cold water for about 15-30 minutes before stuffing them, which can further mellow their heat.

What’s the best way to store and reheat leftovers?

If you happen to have any leftover Jalapeño Bacon Mummies (a rare occurrence, I warn you!), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, place them on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 8-10 minutes, or until warmed through and the dough crisps up again. Microwaving is not recommended as it can make the dough soggy.

These golden-brown appetizers are not only a visual delight but also a testament to how fun and delicious food can be! They’re always the first to disappear from the party table.

A Treat for All Seasons: Beyond Halloween

While these Jalapeño Bacon Mummies boast a distinctively spooky appearance that makes them absolutely perfect for Halloween festivities, don’t let their seasonal charm limit you! This is truly a delicious and versatile appetizer that can be enjoyed and served any time of the year, for any occasion.

The core components—spicy jalapeños, savory bacon, and creamy, cheesy goodness wrapped in flaky crescent dough—are universally appealing. To transform them into an everyday crowd-pleaser, simply omit the candy eyeballs. You can choose to leave the “eye” space blank, or for a touch of elegance, sprinkle a pinch of finely chopped fresh chives or parsley in that area for a burst of color and fresh flavor. These “un-mummified” poppers are fantastic for game day, potlucks, holiday gatherings, or even a simple weekend snack. Their adaptability means you can enjoy their irresistible flavor all year round, not just when the ghosts and goblins come out!

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Author: Melinda O’Malley Keckler

Ingredients

  • 1, 8 ounce container cream cheesesoftened, for easy mixing
  • ¾ cup baconpackaged Hormel Real Bacon or about 6 slices of fresh bacon, cooked crispy and diced into small pieces
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheesegrated, for flavor and texture
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 8-10 jalapeno pepperssliced in half lengthwise and seeded
  • 1, 8 ounce can Pillsbury crescent dinner rollsor any variety of refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 16-20 candy eyesfor the mummy decoration

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or spraying lightly with cooking spray.
  • In a medium bowl, soften the cream cheese in the microwave on low power for about 15-30 seconds until it’s easy to stir and spread. Add the cooked bacon, grated Parmesan cheese, and garlic powder. Stir all ingredients together thoroughly until well combined. Set this flavorful mixture aside.
  • Carefully rinse the jalapeño peppers under cold water and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Slice each jalapeño in half lengthwise, trying to keep the stem intact on some halves for a more authentic “mummy head” look. Using a small spoon (a grapefruit spoon works perfectly), meticulously scrape out all the pulp and seeds from each jalapeño half to control the spice level.
  • Unroll the refrigerated crescent roll dough. If using crescent rolls that come in triangles, pinch the perforated seams together firmly to form two rectangular sheets of dough. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the dough into long, thin strips, approximately ¼ to ½ inch wide. These strips will be your mummy bandages.
  • Line your prepared baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it with non-stick cooking spray (like Pam) to prevent sticking.
  • Spoon a generous scoop of the cream cheese and bacon mixture into each jalapeño half. Gently pat the filling down so it’s relatively even with the edge of the pepper, avoiding a high mound. Take a strip of crescent dough and begin wrapping it snugly around each stuffed pepper, creating the appearance of mummy bandages. Ensure you leave a small, clear gap near the top of each pepper—this is where the candy eyes will be inserted after baking. Place the wrapped peppers on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake the mummies for 15-20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the crescent roll dough is puffed up and beautifully golden brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent overbrowning.
  • Once baked, carefully remove the mummies from the oven. While they are still warm, gently press the candy eyeballs into the small gap you left in the dough. The residual heat will help them adhere. Arrange them on a serving platter and get ready for a chorus of “oohs” and “aahs”!

Notes

Safety First: Be very careful when handling jalapeño peppers. Their oils can cause irritation. It’s highly recommended to wear kitchen gloves to protect your skin, or at the very least, avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, after handling and slicing the peppers. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water afterward. Dough Quantity: Depending on the size of your jalapeño peppers and how thinly you slice your crescent roll dough, you may find that one container is sufficient for 8-10 peppers, or you might need to use more than one can of dough to ensure all your mummies are perfectly wrapped. Serving Suggestions: Elevate your appetizer round by serving these spooky treats alongside delicious Cranberry Jalapeño Meatballs and sophisticated Individual Charcuterie Cups. This combination offers a variety of flavors and textures that will impress all your guests!
