Supplies/Shopping List for Dipped Sugar Wafers

Vanilla sugar wafers are my go-to for this recipe, but any crisp wafer cookie works. Dipping them in chocolate transforms them into a fun, customizable snack.

To make neat candy letters, a silicone alphabet mold is very helpful. It produces clean, consistent letters far easier than piping by hand.

dipped wafers for wordle snack ingredients (1)
  • Vanilla sugar wafers (any brand)
  • Green melting chocolate
  • Black melting chocolate
  • Yellow melting chocolate
  • White melting chocolate
  • Crisco shortening (or other neutral vegetable shortening)
  • Wax paper
  • Four small bowls
  • Silicone letter mold (or piping bag to freehand letters)

Step by Step Instructions

Begin by planning which letters and colors you’ll need for your edible Wordle board. If you want a full six-row Wordle layout, you’ll need 30 squares (six rows of five), which is about 7–8 whole wafers cut into quarters.

To make candy letters: melt white chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl with about 1 teaspoon of shortening per cup of chocolate. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth. Spoon or pipe the melted chocolate into the silicone letter mold, smooth the tops with an offset spatula or knife, and chill in the refrigerator or freezer until set. Gently pop the letters from the mold and set aside.

Prepare the wafers by slicing each cookie into four equal square pieces using a sharp knife. For a standard Wordle board you’ll want 30 squares total.

chop wafers into squares

Decide which squares should be green (correct letter, correct spot), yellow (correct letter, wrong spot), and black/gray (incorrect letter). It helps to list the words you plan to spell and note which letters need which colors before you start dipping.

dip wafers in melting chocolate colors

Work one color at a time. Melt the chosen color of melting chocolate in a small bowl, then dip each wafer square until it’s fully coated. Lift the wafer with a fork and gently tap the fork on the bowl’s edge to remove excess chocolate and air bubbles. Lay the dipped square on wax paper.

While the chocolate is still wet, press a letter candy onto any squares that require letters. If you’re not adding letters, simply let the coated wafers set completely.

let dipped wafers dry

After the chocolate has hardened, arrange the squares on a large plate or serving tray to mimic a Wordle grid. You can spell a solved puzzle, create a partial reveal, or just make a colorful assortment of squares.

Kids and adults alike enjoy assembling and guessing the words. This project is especially fun when you plan themed words—for example, “TREAT” or “HAPPY”—or let guests build their own solutions.

If you like dipping snacks in chocolate, consider other variations such as peanut butter-filled crackers dipped in chocolate for an alternate treat.
