I recently tried Prepared Pantry’s Deli Rye bread mix. Prepared Pantry produces several excellent rye bread mixes, and while this one is pleasant and made tasty sandwiches, it didn’t reach the same level as their Black Russian or Dill Rye mixes.

The package claims, “Even those who say they don’t like rye bread like this bread.” That may be because, apart from the caraway seeds, this loaf leans toward a wheat-like flavor rather than a robust rye profile.

The instructions specify water at exactly 80°F. I use a Zojirushi bread machine, which includes a preheat phase, so I used tap water and followed my machine’s usual process. If your machine does not preheat, follow the mix’s directions and use water at the recommended temperature.

This mix also calls for vegetable oil in addition to water, so be sure to add that when assembling the ingredients.

I added the ingredients according to my Zojirushi’s recommended order, making a small nest for the yeast and selecting the basic cycle. The dough handled well and the finished loaf had a pleasant texture and aroma.

The deli rye produced good sandwiches and is a reliable, easy option when you want something quick and flavorful. If you prefer a stronger, more traditional rye flavor, consider Prepared Pantry’s Black Russian or Dill Rye mixes, which have a deeper rye character and more pronounced seasoning.

Overall, Prepared Pantry’s Deli Rye is an enjoyable everyday rye-style loaf: approachable for people who don’t usually like rye, straightforward to prepare in a bread machine, and tasty enough for sandwiches and toasting.
