How to Make Crispy Fried Donuts at Home

These super-easy fried donuts are delicious, require only a few ingredients, and come together in minutes—my family couldn’t get enough.

If you’ve spent any time browsing recipe ideas, you’ve likely seen the trend of turning refrigerated biscuits into quick homemade donuts. I had noticed it many times and finally decided to try it. Simple, fast, and utterly satisfying, these donuts are a perfect weekend breakfast or a last-minute treat.

I’m currently craving all sorts of indulgent comfort foods, so when I came across the idea again, I gave it a go for a Sunday morning. The result was a batch of warm, crisp-on-the-outside, light-and-tender-on-the-inside fried donuts that disappeared quickly. J and A were thrilled, and I loved how effortless the whole process was.

These donuts crisp up beautifully when fried and hold a soft, airy center that you simply can’t get from baked versions. The technique is straightforward: use store-bought refrigerated biscuits, cut a hole in the center with a soda bottle cap or a small cutter, fry briefly until golden brown, then toss in cinnamon-sugar or brush with melted butter and glaze. The whole process moves fast, so have your toppings ready and exercise caution around the hot oil.

I offered a choice of cinnamon-sugar or glaze; cinnamon-sugar won this time and was a classic match for the warm donuts. You can also try powdered sugar, chocolate sauce, or a thin vanilla glaze for variety. Whatever you choose, serve them immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Super Easy Fried Donuts

Source: The Southern Plate

Ingredients:

  • Refrigerated biscuits (I used large homestyle biscuits; avoid the flaky-layered varieties)
  • Canola oil (about ½ inch in the pan)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

Pour about ½ inch of canola oil into a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan and heat over medium to medium-high heat. It usually takes roughly 10 minutes to reach the proper frying temperature. You’ll know the oil is ready when a small piece of dough placed in the pan immediately sizzles and bubbles around the edges.

Use a soda cap or a small round cutter to punch a hole in the center of each biscuit, creating a donut shape and a few donut-hole pieces. Test one donut hole first to check the oil temperature.

Fry the donuts in batches so the oil temperature does not drop. Cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 1–2 minutes, then flip and cook the other side until golden and cooked through. Transfer cooked donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

When all donuts are fried, lightly brush or dip each side in melted butter, then toss in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated. Serve immediately while warm for the best texture and flavor.

These easy fried donuts make a great quick breakfast, a party treat, or a cozy indulgence. With minimal ingredients and simple steps, they’re a wonderful recipe to keep on hand when you want homemade donuts without the fuss.
