Today is my official birthday, but the celebrations started a day early with breakfast at Meli Cafe in Greektown/West Loop. Conveniently situated on the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, the cafe sits right where the annual Greek Festival would be unfolding later that afternoon and into the evening.

As we walked from the bus stop, vendors were setting up beneath rows of blue-and-white tents: everything from preserves and handmade goods to knock-off designer bags and the irresistible smell of souvlaki and meat grilling over large beds of coals. The festival atmosphere gave the neighborhood a lively, authentic Greektown energy even before the official festivities began.

Meli Cafe was busy that morning, but we were seated promptly. The interior’s blue, white, and yellow palette complements the Greektown surroundings and evokes a Mediterranean feel. The breakfast menu is extensive, covering classics like pancakes, French toast, crepes, and a wide range of egg preparations with thoughtful ingredient combinations.
Meli — the Greek word for honey — is an apt name for a place where honey appears as a featured ingredient in several signature dishes. The cafe strikes a nice balance between traditional American breakfast favorites and touches of Greek flavor and hospitality.
Although I often choose carbohydrate-forward breakfasts, I opted for the asparagus and gruyère omelet topped with hollandaise. The dish arrived with a generous portion of baby red potatoes that had been oven-roasted for a crisp, seasoned exterior, plus two hearty slices of toast.

The potatoes were a highlight — well-seasoned, golden, and flavorful — and the omelet was solid, though the center was slightly firmer than I prefer. Service included small glass bowls of excellent jam and a dish of whipped butter for the toast, a simple touch that elevated the meal.

Overall, it was a satisfying breakfast that sustained me through several hours of walking around Chicagoland in unseasonably hot weather. The combination of friendly service, a bright, welcoming dining room, and a menu that blends familiar breakfast fare with Mediterranean accents makes Meli Cafe a worthy stop if you’re in Greektown or the West Loop.
