Can cinnamon make you feel better?

Recently I shared a simple Cinnamon Sore Throat Tea. Cinnamon is a flavor I turn to often, and some people find cinnamon comforting when they’re under the weather. Whatever the reason, this flavor has been a welcome part of our recovery from recent colds.

Copycat recipe

My favorite Starbucks drink for a long time has been the Cinnamon Dolce Latte, especially with soy milk. It isn’t the most common syrup flavor you see, but I find it comforting and rich without being heavy. Making the syrup at home lets me enjoy the same flavor while controlling sweetness and using it in other ways.

Since I brew coffee at home, I rarely buy a drink out anymore. I prefer customizing drinks to taste: the strength of the coffee, the level of sweetness, and the milk or milk alternative. If you like experimenting, try this syrup in lattes, iced drinks, club soda, or cocktails for a fun twist.

Save money

Making your own Cinnamon Dolce Latte Syrup saves money and lets you make a larger batch than a store-bought bottle. This recipe makes enough for multiple drinks and keeps in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed jar for about a month. If you use three tablespoons per drink, you’ll find the batch will last through many cups.

Beyond coffee, the syrup is delicious mixed into club soda or seltzer for a sparkling afternoon pick-me-up. You can also add it to hot tea, drizzle over desserts, or use a splash in cocktails. Adjust the amount to your preference—start small and add more if you like it sweeter.

Afternoon pick-me-up

Club soda and a spoonful of Cinnamon Dolce Latte Syrup is a light, refreshing treat that lifts the afternoon. Use however much syrup makes you happy—about 2–4 tablespoons per serving is a reasonable guideline depending on desired sweetness. For a full latte experience, add steamed milk and a dollop of whipped cream.

A fun note: “dolce” means “sweet” in Italian, which seems perfectly suited for this syrup.

More simple syrups

If you enjoy making syrups at home, try other flavors to build a small stash of homemade mixers. Lemon verbena, basil, lavender, and classic cinnamon syrups all offer different ways to enhance drinks and desserts. Homemade syrups are easy to scale and let you control quality and sweetness.

Calories: 26 kcal per serving (estimate)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 cup strong coffee
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso (optional, for extra depth)

Instructions

  1. Place the water, sugar, and cinnamon sticks in a small saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 15 minutes so the cinnamon infuses the syrup.
  3. Remove from heat, stir in the strong coffee and instant espresso if using, and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Remove and discard the cinnamon sticks. Strain if desired, then transfer the syrup to a tightly sealed jar.
  5. Store in the refrigerator for up to one month. Use about 2–4 tablespoons per drink or to taste.

Notes

Recipe yields about 16 servings at roughly 3 tablespoons per serving; adjust to taste. The espresso is optional but adds a rich, coffee-forward note that works well in lattes.
