Morning Mixed Berry Smoothie Recipe for Energy and Immunity

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you had a wonderful 2013 and I’m raising a smoothie to an even better 2014.

Of course children don’t understand it’s a new year, so the 6:30 wake-up call of “Mama, Daddy, I’m awake!” still went off. I sent my poor other half — who complained that his head felt “a bit dry” — off to deal with them.

Soon the guilt started to kick in. I have a list of resolutions I genuinely plan to keep this year. One of them is to be kinder to my partner, and another is to eat seriously good, healthy food to work off all the Christmas and New Year excesses.

So I made this smoothie for him.

Throughout January I’ll be sharing a selection of delicious, healthy recipes that might help you keep some of your eating resolutions, if you have any like me.

Frozen berries work well here if you don’t have fresh ones, and leftover cooked porridge oats can be used too. I like this with strawberries, and my other half prefers blackberries — see what works for you. For today’s breakfast smoothie I used a creamy Greek-style yoghurt.

I’m off to drink another smoothie while we slowly fold away wrapping paper and start taking down the decorations. Happy New Year again — I look forward to spending time with you through 2014 and beyond.

Ingredients

  • 200 g (1 1/4 cup) berries
  • 2 bananas, peeled
  • 120–240 ml (1/2–1 cup) milk
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) Greek-style yoghurt
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Honey to taste (optional)
  • 6 tbsp cooked oats

Instructions

  1. Put all the ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.
  2. Top with some extra berries and serve.

Notes

I like thick smoothies, so I use about 120 ml of milk. Add more milk if you prefer a thinner consistency.
