If you think bourbon or rye whiskey isn’t for you, this cocktail might change your mind. The Southern Sunset — a bourbon and rye whiskey cocktail — blends smooth spirits, bright cranberry syrup and aromatic bitters into a balanced, elegant drink with a dramatic finishing flourish.
Using bourbon and rye together brings a nice balance: bourbon adds round sweetness while rye contributes spice and structure. That combination, plus cranberry simple syrup and Angostura bitters, produces a mellow, layered cocktail that’s approachable even for those new to whiskey-based drinks.
What’s in the Southern Sunset?
This drink is both visually striking and flavorful. The core components are bourbon, rye whiskey, cranberry simple syrup and Angostura bitters. The showstopper is a light flaming rinse of Yellow Chartreuse and a quick spray of orange zest that sparks and adds a bright citrus aroma.
Bourbon and Rye Whiskey

Choose a bourbon and rye you enjoy. A Kentucky bourbon with a touch of sweetness pairs well with a spicier rye to produce a balanced profile. In this cocktail the spirit flavors are present but restrained, letting the syrup, bitters and aromatic rinse shine. If you’re experimenting, try different combos to find your preferred balance.
Cranberry Simple Syrup
Homemade cranberry simple syrup is easy and bright, especially at holiday time, but you can make it year-round with frozen cranberries or cranberry juice.
To make cranberry simple syrup:
- Combine 2 cups cranberries and 2 cups water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15–20 minutes.
- When the berries have popped and the skins split, strain the mixture through a fine sieve and return the liquid to low heat.
- Add 1 cup granulated sugar (or match the sugar amount to the liquid volume), stir until dissolved, then remove from heat and cool completely.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Angostura Bitters
Angostura aromatic bitters add herbal and spice complexity, helping to unify the drink. A few dashes are enough to round out the sweetness and spirit base. While you can omit bitters, they elevate the final flavor.
Chartreuse Rinse
The visual and aromatic highlight of this cocktail is a small Yellow Chartreuse rinse. Use about 1/4 oz poured into the coupe and tilted so the liqueur coats roughly three-quarters of the glass. Yellow Chartreuse is herbal with a slightly sweet profile and a high enough ABV to ignite briefly. If you can’t find Chartreuse, an herbal sweet liqueur such as Galliano can work as a substitute.
DISCLAIMER: Alcohol is flammable. Use caution when working with fire to avoid burns or accidents.

Flaming Zest
The flame is part presentation and part aroma builder. After lighting the Chartreuse, quickly squeeze an orange peel so the oils spray onto the flame — the zest will spark briefly and release fragrant citrus oils. Then pour the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the coupe, which will extinguish the flame and introduce a touch of smoke and a burst of orange aroma.

For added drama, you can spritz another orange peel through the flame of a long match or lighter right before serving. Otherwise, garnish with the zested peel or a dehydrated or fresh orange wheel.

Enjoy!
The Southern Sunset is a stylish, flavorful cocktail that’s great for entertaining or a special evening at home. If you try it, share your experience or tag photos on social media to show off the dramatic presentation.
