Who’s ready for Halloween? The cats and I certainly are. Each year, as soon as I sense the first cool breeze or see leaves begin to change, I pull out a small tub of fall decorations. It isn’t a lot—two ceramic pumpkins, a couple of table runners, and some seasonal napkins—but to me it’s enough to set a cozy, autumnal mood. I admire the elaborate displays I see on social media—mantels piled high with pumpkins, entire tables draped in harvest colors—but a few meaningful pieces work perfectly for our home.
One of my favorite items is a polka-dotted pumpkin whose origin I can’t quite remember. The playful dots give it both a whimsical and classic feel, and it fits in wherever I place it. In one photo, Coco looks like she’s disapproving of the décor, but she was actually caught mid-grooming. The cats are usually unfazed by the seasonal accents; they care far more about the prime window seats.
Speaking of windows, this pumpkin often sits on the table by the bay window—what I like to call my planning table. It’s a sunny spot where I sort through ideas, jot down seasonal recipes, and watch the garden activity. The cats love it too because it gives them a clear view of the bird feeder and the bird bath. Those little wildlife shows are a highlight of both fall and any other season in our yard.
My other pumpkin is a simple white one that I used in a recent recipe post about healthy pumpkin muffins with oats and chocolate chips. The pale pumpkin complements the rustic autumn palette and works well in photos for food and décor posts. For some images I like to use an artistic filter to give a soft, painterly look; it helps capture the warm, nostalgic feeling of fall evenings.
Now, about Halloween candy—have you bought yours yet? Last year I made the mistake of stocking up on candies I personally didn’t enjoy. I thought avoiding my favorites would reduce temptation, but it backfired: even our cat sitter refused some of the offerings, and I ended up discarding quite a bit. This year I went the other way and bought a bag of chocolate bars, including my favorite, Heath bars. I plan to set aside the ones I love and treat them as a last resort. My dentist may have thoughts about that plan, but for now it’s a small seasonal indulgence.
Decorating for fall doesn’t require a lot of objects or a massive makeover. A couple of well-chosen pieces, a cozy table runner, and a warm drink in hand can create a welcoming atmosphere. I prefer a restrained approach that highlights a few sentimental items—those ceramics and the pumpkins—rather than overwhelming every surface. It makes the house feel festive without becoming cluttered, and it leaves room for the things that matter most: good food, quiet moments, and the cats’ contented presence.
This week I’m joining several weekly cat and seasonal blog events, including Caturday Art, Selfie Sundays, Thankful Thursday, Cat Thursday, Friday Linkies, and Feline Friday. These link-ups are a fun way to connect with other pet lovers and creative bloggers, share photos, and celebrate the small joys of life with animals and seasonal décor.
