I usually make potato rolls because they’re rich and tender, but when we’re pressed for time these One Hour Rolls are my go-to. They’re still light, soft, and delicious, yet much faster to pull together. If you want homemade bread on the table tonight without spending hours in the kitchen, these are a great option.
My kids don’t fuss over which roll we serve—they just want plenty of homemade strawberry or raspberry jam to spread on top. Add a smear of fresh jam and the rolls become irresistible.

These rolls work equally well for everyday meals and special occasions. They’ve become a Sunday and holiday staple in our house—Mother’s Day would feel incomplete without them. Even when tacos are on the menu, I’m tempted to request (not make) rolls to go alongside. And if someone else volunteers to make dinner, I’m definitely staying out of the kitchen.
Can You Use Dinner Rolls for Sliders?
Dinner rolls are an excellent size and texture for sliders. Their soft crumb and sturdy tops make them easy to slice and hold a small burger or pulled meat without falling apart.
How Long Will Dinner Rolls Stay Fresh?
At room temperature, properly stored rolls will stay fresh for about 6–7 days. Keep them wrapped in plastic, in an airtight bag, or in a sealed container to retain moisture and softness.
For longer storage, freeze the cooled rolls in a freezer-safe bag or wrapped in plastic and foil. Frozen rolls keep well for up to six months.
How Can You Tell if Your Yeast is Good?
Test active dry yeast quickly: dissolve 1 teaspoon sugar in 1/2 cup warm water, sprinkle one packet of yeast on top, stir, and let sit for about 10 minutes. After a few minutes the mixture should begin to foam and rise. If a foamy layer forms within 10 minutes, the yeast is active. If no foam appears, the yeast is no longer good and should be replaced.
