Sweet potato casserole has been a cherished tradition in my home for years. Whenever I try to replace it with something different—mashed potatoes or another side dish—the family protests. This recipe is the version we always return to, and what sets it apart is the sweetened condensed milk. It adds rich sweetness and creaminess that make this casserole feel almost like a dessert, yet perfectly complements savory Thanksgiving dishes.
If you enjoy sweet potato casserole, I think you’ll love this take on the classic. It’s simple, comforting, and reliably well-received at holiday gatherings. The recipe serves six, but it can easily be doubled for larger groups.
Sweet Potato Casserole
Serves 6
By: Vicki Bensinger
- 4 large sweet potatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- Juice of 1 orange
- ½ cup pecans (optional)
- Marshmallows for garnish
Place the sweet potatoes and salt in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes and preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel and cut them into large chunks. Transfer the pieces to a large mixing bowl and mash until mostly smooth. Add the sugar, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, melted butter, and orange juice. Whisk or beat until the mixture is smooth and well combined. If you like a bit of crunch, fold in the chopped pecans.
Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and spread the sweet potato mixture evenly in the dish. Top the casserole with marshmallows and bake until the filling is heated through and the marshmallows are lightly browned, about 20–30 minutes.
This recipe can easily be doubled for a larger crowd.
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving. May your loved ones gather around the table and share good food and warm memories this coming Thursday.
Warm regards,
Vicki Bensinger
