The blood orange vesper martini is a dramatic cocktail inspired by a classic espionage love story.

At this time of year, when pinks, reds and hearts fill the shelves, I find myself thinking about James Bond. It may seem an unlikely association with romance, but Bond embodies traits that many find alluring: impeccable style, effortless confidence, dry wit and a knack for staying composed under pressure. Set aside his darker tendencies, and you’ll find a man who is capable of love. That duality — cool, controlled yet capable of deep feeling — inspired this cocktail. It’s a modern take on the Vesper martini from Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale, reimagined with blood orange for color and bittersweet flavor.

In Casino Royale, the newly minted MI6 agent James Bond orders a very specific cocktail at the bar: a dry martini made with three parts Gordon’s gin, one part vodka and half a part Kina Lillet, served in a deep champagne goblet with a long lemon peel. Later in the story he names the drink “Vesper” after Vesper Lynd, the woman he loves. Her tragic fate haunts Bond in subsequent novels — he never orders another Vesper, a small testament to how the drink and the memory of Vesper are forever linked.

One challenge in recreating the Vesper is Kina Lillet. “Kina” refers to quinquina — a bitter component derived from cinchona bark — which gave the original Kina Lillet a distinct bitterness. In 1985 the product was reformulated and its bitter quinine flavor was diminished. Modern Lillet Blanc and other variants no longer mirror the original Kina Lillet, so an exact recreation isn’t possible without vintage bottles.

For this version, I preserved Bond’s gin-to-vodka ratio but replaced the half part of Kina Lillet with half part Grand Marnier and one part fresh blood orange juice. Grand Marnier brings a refined orange bitterness and depth that nods to the original Kina’s bitter-sweet character, while the blood orange adds acidity, vivid color and fragrant citrus that make the cocktail ideal for a Valentine’s-themed drink or any evening when you want something striking and balanced.

This Blood Orange Vesper Martini is crisp, slightly bitter, and bright in both taste and appearance. It’s elegant enough for a special occasion and simple enough to prepare in minutes. Serve it in a champagne goblet or a classic martini glass for a refined presentation. While the recipe calls for fresh blood orange juice for the best flavor, high-quality bottled blood orange juice can work if fresh fruit isn’t available.
