Gerber Folding Entrenching Tool — Tactical Folding Spade with Serrated Blade
Product description
What’s included
The package contains the Gerber folding entrenching tool (model 30-000075) with the serrated-blade head. This listing is for the tool itself; it ships without a sheath.
Construction and materials
The spade head is constructed from boron carbon steel with a powder-coated finish for corrosion resistance and toughness. One half of the cutting edge is serrated to help saw through roots, sod, frozen soil and ice. The shaft is a high-strength anodized 7075 aluminum alloy for rigidity without excessive bulk. The handle is molded from glass-filled nylon and uses an open profile to offer multiple hand positions and extra leverage while digging.
Size and weight
When folded the tool measures approximately 9.37 inches for compact storage. When opened and locked it reaches about 2 feet overall length. The manufacturer lists the weight in the low- to mid‑two‑pound range, making it light enough to carry in a vehicle or pack yet substantial enough for heavy chores.
How it’s used
The head functions as a conventional shovel, and the serrated portion is useful for cutting through turf, roots and dense material. It folds for transport and deploys quickly at camp, on the trail, or during roadside recovery. A threaded, ridged collar wraps the shaft and tightens to lock the blade in the open position, keeping the head stable under pressure. Use it for digging fire pits, small trenches, post holes, clearing debris, or emergency vehicle extraction.

Saved my vehicle during a winter stuck situation
Fits small emergency kits and lived in my car. I used it to dig my Cherokee out of frozen ground at 28°F — it took hours in icy soil but the tool stayed solid and the plastic handle spared my hands from cold metal. I’m buying extras to keep one at home and one for friends.

Handled a long, dirty trenching job
Used it to dig a long drainage trench in a 30" crawlspace — stayed locked, stayed sharp, and worked through roots. Light and foldable enough for camping, but rugged enough for serious grunt work.

Wayne Edgeworth 5/5
Solid replacement for a worn military e-tool
Bought it as a practical, less expensive alternative to a military entrenching tool. Locks securely, folds and unfolds easily even when muddy, and feels comfortable to use. I would have liked a carrying case.

Atom 5/5
Sturdy, comfortable spade for campsite prep
Folds small, sets up rigidly and doesn’t rattle during work. Serrated edge is useful and grip options are comfortable. Has performed well clearing debris and preparing campsites; no rust so far.

Unexploded Minds 5/5
Compact utility shovel that performs
Keeps in my hiking pack and handles small fire pits and light digging. Sturdier than ultralight models but lighter than full‑metal military shovels. Not for large landscaping jobs, but perfect for camping and emergency carry.

Brian Grzymkowski 5/5
Powerful little shovel for camp trenching
A big step up from a trowel-style folder. I trenched around tents after heavy rain and it cut through earth, roots and small rock with little strain. Short length but excellent leverage — I’ve relied on it many times over a couple seasons.

Tetsu Noguchi 4/5
Durable but heavier than ultralight options
This falls into the heavier folding-shovel group: thick steel resists torque and cuts roots and clay, but the weight makes it less ideal for long backpacking trips where every ounce matters.

Snik 5/5
High build quality and cold-weather friendly
Well made with quality steel and a strong nylon handle. In extremely cold conditions the handle remained usable and did not become brittle. Joints and the serrated edge feel reliable.
