Natural Blood Meal Plant Food — 3 lb Organic Nitrogen Fertilizer
Product description
What’s included: a 3 lb package of dried blood meal — a high-nitrogen, animal-derived soil amendment formulated for home gardeners and landscapers.
Material and function: this product is concentrated dried blood, prized for its high nitrogen percentage. It supplies nitrogen to support leaf and shoot growth, making it suitable for annuals, vegetables, shrubs, trees and potted plants.
How it’s used: sprinkle or lightly work the blood meal into garden beds, mix into potting mixes for containers, or broadcast around established ornamentals and fruiting plants. Follow recommended application rates for seedlings versus mature, heavy-feeding crops.
Compost application: adding blood meal to carbon-rich compost (leaves, straw, wood chips) speeds microbial activity and warms the pile, helping materials break down more quickly.
Feeding intensity: apply standard rates for routine maintenance; increase the quantity for large specimens or plants with higher nitrogen demands. Store the bag sealed and dry between uses.
Pros
- High nitrogen concentration for green growth
- Speeds up high-carbon compost piles
- Versatile for beds, containers, and trees
Cons
- Not an immediate-acting fertilizer for fast fixes
- Strong odor when applied
- Animal-derived product (not plant-based)
VerdictA reliable organic nitrogen source that favors slow, steady feeding for many garden plants and helps jump-start compost. Works well for heavy feeders but not ideal if you need an instant green-up.

Does the job
I’ve used this before and it performs as expected for adding nitrogen to the soil.

Strong smell, effective for plants
Plants respond well, but the odor is very noticeable right after application.

Slow-release nitrogen — not a quick fix
Provides steady nitrogen over time but didn’t green up my onions fast enough. Ideal for plants that benefit from a gradual supply rather than an immediate surge.

Keeps critters off bulbs
Worked well for me — used in spring to discourage squirrels and rabbits from digging up tulip bulbs.

Handy size and improved packaging
Good for home gardeners — the 3 lb bag is convenient. I gifted a bag to a farmer friend who was pleased. Switched from a cardboard pack to this sealed bag and liked the upgrade.

Finally edible corn after using it at planting
Used it late one season with little result, but applied at planting the next year and my corn yielded edible ears for the first time in several attempts. Easy to sprinkle and reasonably effective.

Noticeable growth boost
Basil and mums took off after I mixed a bit into planting holes. Hydrangeas also looked much healthier the following season. I’ll buy this again.

Planning to use in beds and compost
Preparing to mix it into soil for vegetables and melons. I’ll also add some to the compost bin as a nitrogen source while I learn through trial and research.
