ProD2 Passive Stereo Direct Box — 2-Channel DI Unit
Product description
Passive stereo direct box with custom isolation transformer, ground lift and 15 dB pad
The ProD2 is a two-channel passive DI designed to convert unbalanced, high-impedance signals into balanced, low-impedance outputs suitable for mixing consoles and recording interfaces. It features a custom isolation transformer per channel to reject hum and ground loops, a lift switch to break ground connections, and a 15 dB input pad to handle hot line-level sources.
What’s included: the ProD2 unit and a quick-start guide. Construction and materials: the unit is housed in a heavy-duty steel enclosure with a durable powder coat finish and rugged jacks and switchgear built for regular road use. Size and footprint: compact, pedal-bag friendly and designed to fit into rack trays or small racks — intended to be portable yet robust for live and studio environments.
Typical uses: ideal for active acoustic guitars, electric bass, electric pianos, synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, DJ mixers and consumer players such as CD, DVD and MP3 devices. Use the pad for hot signals, engage the ground lift to cure hum, and route the balanced XLR outputs to your desk or interface.
Passive vs active DI explanation: unlike active direct boxes that rely on powered circuitry (batteries, 48V phantom or external supplies) to change impedance and boost or buffer signals, the ProD2 uses passive transformers to balance and isolate the signal. The transformer-based design requires no power and provides excellent common-mode rejection and robust protection against phantom power mishaps.
Operation is straightforward: plug the source into the 1/4" inputs, set the pad if needed, toggle the lift to remove hum, and send the balanced XLR outputs to the PA or recorder. The unit’s build and transformer design make it a reliable choice for both stage and studio.
Pros
- Transformer isolation gives very low noise and hum rejection
- No power required — always ready to use
- Extremely rugged steel construction
Cons
- Heavier than many plastic-bodied DIs
- No built-in preamp or EQ for boosting weak passive pickups
- Cannot supply active gain (no battery or phantom-powered electronics)
VerdictA dependable, passive stereo DI that delivers clean, balanced outputs with transformer isolation and a ground lift. It handles a wide range of sources without needing batteries or phantom power, is built to withstand touring use, and keeps noise to a minimum — ideal for stage and studio.

Stereo, No Batteries — Works Great
Only used in the studio so far, but replacing a battery-dependent DI with this passive stereo unit was a relief. Keys sound clear and full without worrying about power.

Noticeable Upgrade Over Economy DIs
I moved up from cheap DIs and immediately heard better clarity and less need for EQ. It passes synth and line sources cleanly and was ideal for a school musical where students weren’t familiar with gain staging.

Built Like a Tank
This DI is ridiculously sturdy and survives heavy gig use. It reliably converts unbalanced signals to balanced XLRs and sounds clear whether tracking or playing live. It’s been dropped and handled roughly but never missed a beat — extremely dependable.

Rock Solid DI
A stellar DI that holds up over years of heavy use. Units we’ve used for a decade still perform like new.

Solved Our Church’s Buzzing Problem
Swapping in this DI for our electric drum rig stopped intermittent popping and removed a persistent buzz. We could raise levels without the noise and keep the drums present in the mix.

No Added Noise — Good Product
Excellent noise performance. Note: connecting to some mic inputs that supply phantom can introduce voltage issues — I added coupling caps to block DC and now it behaves correctly.

Tour-Proven and Dependable
We’ve used three of these for club shows and just bought a fourth. They sit in a rack tray, eliminate hum and protect our interfaces from phantom power — never had issues.
