Rode VideoMic NTG — On‑Camera Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone
Product description
The VideoMic NTG is a broadcast-grade shotgun microphone designed primarily for on-camera use but built to cover many recording roles. Its acoustic design mirrors the award-winning NTG5, delivering a neutral, transparent tonal balance with a very flat frequency response, a tight supercardioid polar pattern and low self-noise. The result is a compact mic that competes with larger professional shotguns while staying easy to mount on DSLRs, mirrorless cameras or compact rigs.
Functionality is extensive: an auto-sensing 3.5mm output detects whether it’s connected to a camera (TRS) or a mobile device (TRRS), eliminating the need for adaptors; the 3.5mm jack also becomes a headphone output when using the USB connection. Digital switches provide access to a high-pass filter, a -20 dB pad, a high-frequency boost and a safety channel. There’s an infinitely variable gain control for fine-tuning output level and a peak warning LED so you can avoid clipping. In USB mode the NTG functions as a fully featured digital microphone for computers, tablets and phones.
The VideoMic NTG is built for practical field use: compact and lightweight enough for hotshoe mounting or boom operation, yet ruggedly constructed from metal and durable polymer components. It pairs with cameras, boom poles, pistol grips and mobile devices — for iOS Lightning-equipped devices you’ll need Rode’s SC15/SC19 Lightning cable and to ensure the mic firmware is current for full compatibility.
Pros
- Broadcast-quality, neutral sound
- Flexible routing: auto-sensing jack + USB
- Precise infinitely variable gain and digital filters
Cons
- Not the cheapest option for single-use scenarios
- Lightning cable sold separately for iOS
- Some workflows may require firmware updates
VerdictA compact, broadcast-grade shotgun that combines superb sound with broad connectivity. It works as a shoe-mounted mic, boom or USB interface, offering precise gain control and useful digital filters. Ideal for run-and-gun shooters, content creators and hybrid setups, though specialists who only need one narrow use case may prefer a dedicated alternative.

Perfect, amazing audio.

High-quality hypercardioid performance in a small form
Rode consistently delivers professional audio and this mic is no exception. It isolates interview subjects well while keeping natural ambience, with detailed capture that rivals pricier shotguns — a strong value for those wanting tight hypercardioid pickup.

Fast, thoughtful delivery; note missing windshield
Delivery was quick and the courier left it at the door. Note that the kit I received did not include a furry windscreen, so for outdoor windy recording you’ll need a windshield.

Fantastic for multiple roles
I use it on a Sony A7 for professional shoots, and it doubles as a great voice-over and streaming mic. Dual-channel safety, long battery life and fast setup make it invaluable.

Best value among USB-enabled shotguns
After years of use it’s still my go-to. Great reach and side-noise rejection; you can keep it off-camera and get podcast-quality sound. Tonal character is brighter than some brands, but with USB output at this price it’s hard to beat.

Less echo and more presence than NT-USB
Compared to a Zoom H1n and a larger USB mic, this unit had lower echo and noise and slightly more presence than the NT-USB. It’s compact and convenient to place on top of cameras or devices.

Five-star versatility and superb sound
This microphone is outstanding — adaptable across desktop, camera and mobile workflows and it replaces several separate mics for me. Sound is clean and balanced in many environments, and the build feels solid and user-friendly.

Unreliable recordings and thin documentation
I experienced several takes with no audio even though surrounding files were fine; it seemed to miss quick consecutive recordings. Documentation didn’t explain file locations clearly and accessing software was frustrating. After multiple shoots I still had failures.

Excellent multi-use mic and good support
My first unit from the seller was defective and didn’t power up, but manufacturer support sent a quick replacement. Since then it’s been brilliant on my Sony A6400 for YouTube, Twitch and podcasting — versatile and reliable in daily use.

Much more than an on-camera mic
Pickup is tight and excellent for run-and-gun interviews. The dual-channel -20 dB safety channel is a lifesaver in dynamic situations. I’ve also used it on a boom and with wireless kits — the USB option makes it handy for quick Zoom calls.

Super-versatile; performs with every device I tried
Fantastic mic — low noise and very directional. I use it on a boom about a foot above my head for videoconferences, and it sounds clear. It auto-detects USB vs TRS/TRRS so I’ve used it with PC USB, a Sony A7R IV in analog mode, an iPad Pro and an iPhone via adapter — all sounded great. Directionality lets you place it just out of frame and still capture good audio.

Almost the perfect all-round shotgun
A true workhorse for streaming, vlogging and interviews — it even handles louder situations with limitations. If you need one mic that does most things well, this is it; but if your use is very specific (for example, only streaming) there are cheaper dedicated options that may suit better.
