Reptile
Clamp-On Dome Lamp for Reptile Basking — Heavy-Duty 5.5"
Product description
This clamp-on dome lamp is built with a 5.5-inch diameter painted aluminum reflector and a sturdy rim clamp designed to grip terrarium edges securely. All sizes in the range include a safety clamp so the fixture stays in place on open-top enclosures.
The dome houses a ceramic/porcelain screw socket that accepts standard incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescents, and ceramic heat emitters. The metal body has vent holes to help dissipate heat and a painted exterior finish; the interior is moderately reflective.
What’s included is the dome housing with attached clamp, the porcelain/ceramic socket, and the power lead (some models include an in-line on/off switch). The lamp is intended to be mounted on the rim of a tank or placed on a mesh lid with care; it’s commonly used to create basking spots and to provide supplemental heat for reptiles. The fixture is rated for bulbs up to 75 watts — choose bulb wattage and spacing to avoid excessive heat buildup in this compact dome.
Pros
- Sturdy heavy-gauge aluminum dome
- Porcelain socket accepts heat-emitting bulbs
- Secure clamp for rim mounting
Cons
- Small dome can get very hot with high-watt bulbs
- Assembly can be non-intuitive for some
- Occasional wiring or connection issues reported
VerdictA sturdy, simple clamp lamp built for open-top terrariums and basking spots. The 5.5" painted aluminum dome and porcelain socket accept incandescent, CFL and ceramic heat emitters up to 75W. Assembly can be awkward for some, and wiring or mounting should be inspected periodically, but the fixture offers reliable heat output and a versatile clamp that fits most tank rims.

Simple and practical
Easy to use and best suited for open-top enclosures because the clamp must seat on the rim. Gets the job done.

Lasts long but can act up
These lamps have good longevity, but occasionally a unit will buzz or be temperamental at the wire connection. Most I’ve owned run fine, but if one starts making noise I tighten or replace it to avoid risk. One fell and cracked the casing yet still operated, so they’re durable but check for signs of trouble.

Best for tanks without lids
The clamp design makes it ideal when you don’t use a full lid. Good for turtles and other animals that won’t escape. The hardware feels solid and the lamp itself is well made. Highly recommended for open-top setups.

Attractive, portable, and sturdy
These clamp lights are easy to set up with one screw and the clamp holds well. We use them on a tote for a tortoise and in an enclosure for a hedgehog. The dome is sturdy, portable, and looks sleek; metal will get hot as expected.

Good quality, assembly a bit tricky
Good build quality but slightly difficult to assemble.

Surprisingly solid for the size
I bought the 5.5" version with the cord switch and it arrived intact with no defects. The porcelain socket feels heavy duty and the black enamel finish looks good. The interior isn’t mirror-bright but reflects enough; vents are decent. It’s rated to 75W but I recommend using 35–50W in this size to avoid overheating. I’m using a 35W halogen and a short porcelain extender to lower the bulb slightly.

Red bulb not working
Disappointed — my red bulb didn’t light. I requested a return.

Works well once you figure assembly
I’ve owned several of these clamps; this model’s assembly is a bit confusing. There are two hole sets but only one needs the wing nut — slip the clamp’s grippy end between them before tightening. Once assembled it’s very durable. I used one temporarily for a rescued baby snapping turtle and, after adding warmth and UV, it recovered and started eating.

Well-built and ceramic compatible
I use this on my veiled chameleon. The ceramic socket compatibility is a big plus in colder climates. The clamp is sturdy and can attach to stands or cage frames. Note it won’t work with compact UV bulbs, which most keepers avoid anyway. Overall a solid pick.

Does the job
Performs as needed and meets our requirements. Good buy.

Small but effective heater
Compact and puts out a surprising amount of heat. Handle carefully and avoid touching anything but the ceramic socket — let it cool before moving. You can sit it on mesh lids if spaced safely from the animal. Vent holes release heat but can cause some glare; switching to infrared ceramic bulbs eliminates visible light.

Mind the 75W limit
Reminder that the fixture supports bulbs up to 75W only. I used an appropriate red bulb and my snake’s shedding improved once the tank was more comfortable. Clamp assembly was awkward; I watched a tutorial to set it up.
